How is my online video posted on my website?
There are TWO methods for posting your videos to your website -
-
- By Streaming Video, or
-
- By Setting Up Your Own Video Player on Your Website
If you haven’t posted a video to a website before, it’s probably best if you ask for help from your webmaster, an IT expert or a programmer. For them, this stuff is easy!
However, if you are determined to give it a go, here’s what you should do!
Set Up Streaming Video
What is Streaming Video?
Streaming video is content sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed by the viewer in real time. With streaming video, a Web user does not have to wait to download a file to play it. (There will be a very short delay before the video plays, however. This is to allow the streaming server to adjust to “bitrate” at which it transmits the video depending on the broadband available to the viewer’s computer.) The media is sent in a continuous stream of data and is played as it arrives to your website. Your video file is hosted by us on a streaming server with huge bandwidth that allows a multitude of viewers to view your video simultaneously. The viewer is looking at your website but the video is streaming from our video server.
What software do users need to view my program?
Most internet-connected computers have Adobe Flash Player software installed. If necessary this can be downloaded at http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/.
(If you have difficulty, go to go to Troubleshoot Adobe Flash Player Installation for Windows on the Adobe website. Particularly useful here is the option to Download an executable installer, close to the bottom of the page in this link.)
How Does It Work?
We will give you a single short piece of computer “code” when your first News piece is ready to go live. You will need to have your Webmaster insert this code into the Home Page of your website. When this code is in place, your video piece will stream into your website every time it is viewed. There is no need to have this code put into your website a second time - whenever an updated video piece is ready for you it will stream to your Home Page without any need for your Webmaster to be involved!
Updated Videos. Where a series of videos is supplied (normally a News piece that is updated regularly), each “new” piece for a Customer will be “pushed” to the Customer’s website when available. This will remove the previous piece from the Customer’s website and from all locations that may have been populated by the viral features of Lifeonmedia videos.
Test
You can have your Webmaster test how the streaming video will “look and feel” on your Home Page by testing a Sample video on a Test Page on your website. (We recommend that your Webmaster copy the code for your Home Page on to a Private Page on your site.) We can send you the code for the streaming of the Sample if you send us an email to info@lifeonmedia.com.
Set Up Your Own Video Player on Your Website
1. Make sure you have a player/controller in SWF format. This SWF file will load your online video and display it on the page. It will also control Stop/Start functions. There are many open-source players available on the internet, but the one we recommend is JW FLV media player. Download this player and upload it to your webserver.
2. Copy your online video .flv file to your webserver.
3. In the sample code below, replace the name “video.flv” with your own flv file.
4. Place the embed code below in the place that you want the video to appear.
5. Point your browser to the HTML file that you just saved and uploaded and you should see and hear the movie playing in the browser.
6. Here is the sample embed code for the FLV clip:
<embed src=”http://www.yoursite.com/mediaplayer.swf”
width=”320″
height=”240″
allowscriptaccess=”always”
allowfullscreen=”true”
flashvars=”height=240&width=320&file=video.flv”
/>
7. Customization
a. The height should be the height of the movie+20 to allow for the control bar.
b. The “flashvars=” parameter contains the width, height and URL (relative or absolute) to the FLV file (e.g.s: ../video.flv or http://yoursite.com/video.flv).
c. The “autoStart=” parameter can be set added if you want. By default, it is set to false to avoid the movie beginning to play immediately (recommended), and rather wait for a click.
What about hosting?
You can host your branded TV News station on your own website or use a site like YouTube.com to host it.
OPTION #1 - Host video on your site
Pros:
- You can use any online flash player with any skin, interface, look & feel etc
- Quality of video is controlled by you only - make it very good or bad, as you wish
- Video size is not limited, you can set any size you like
- Autoplay possibility - video can start to play immediately after a visitor opens your web site;(our default setting is manual start)
Cons:
- It requires a high bandwidth, so it may be expensive if you’d expect a lot of visitors to your site
- Your hosting must be reliable to support requests from many visitors simultaneously
OPTION #2 - Host video on YouTube.com, but insert the video player directly into your web page.
Pros:
- It doesn’t require high bandwidth, it’s almost FREE even if you have a lot of visitors
- YouTube is owned by Google, so reliability is guaranteed
- YouTube provides you with HTML that you can cut and paste into your website; you may be able to insert this yourself (without getting help from a web designer)
Cons:
- It’s possible to use only predefined interface, flash player includes self-advertisement logos of YouTube
- Quality of video is limited
- Video is resized to 320×240
What file format will the program be in?
Adobe Flash format (extension “.flv”).
What width and height dimensions will the video have?
The video will be 320 pixels wide by 180 pixels high - the same dimensions as the videos on this website.
What is the video’s aspect ratio?
The aspect ratio is 16:9 (widescreen).
What else can I do with my online video program?
Use your video as a promotional tool throughout your premises on flat-screen TV viewing points, compress the file and show it on iPod, send it to your friends and colleagues by email , post it on YouTube, My Space, Bebo etc., use it as a promotional tool at trade shows and expos, or use it when you are pitching to clients and customers. Extend the reach of your message online, on-screen, on-device.
Can I make changes to the TV News script?
Yes. We will send the script to you when we receive your press release/Information and you are free to make changes. When we make the changes you suggest, you will sign off on the final script. The editor’s decision is final and no changes can be made after you sign off on the final script.
Can I make changes after I receive the program?
Yes, but unfortunately there is a price! This would require possible re-recording and re-edit and we would have additional costs.
